Stories about those days.

The stories that people have about Jamie’s photos are a source of amazement.  Some are of the “that’s me and we were doing this” type of stories from Jamie’s friends. Some are the “I never met Jamie but this was taken on my birthday and it means a lot to me. And some are just stunningly moving one of a kind stories.

Me and my twinbrother Eric were born on this day.
what a life this man had.
It is profound that the ordinariness of it all is best and most special part.
and that would seems like self refuting idea, but is it?

Three quarters of the infield of the Manhattan Chili Company’s softball team, taken at JJ Walker Field in the West Village. Walker was, arguably, the most corrupt mayor in the history of New York, so we always thought he was lucky to have such a nice little and well-used park named after him.

Some context here from an old pal of Jamie’s. As anyone who has looked through PotD could guess, Jamie loved birthdays (his own, and those of his pals). A game such as Game Six of the ’86 Series is about as great a gift as any Mets fan could ever receive. And, of course, this game was played on Jamie’s 30th birthday.

This is the first hamburger I ever consumed while east of the Mississippi. At the late lamented Riverrun in TriBeCa (note the english muffin for bun and the large hand-cut fries).

The day Reggie Jackson returned to Yankee Stadium as the right fielder for the California Angels. When he hit a home run against Ron Guidry to give the Angels a late lead, the crowd erupted in a sustained chant of “Steinbrenner Sucks”.

And, not for nothin’, if you were a Bard softball player and these two cats were holding down the left side of the infield, there’s a great chance you were on the winning team.

This was taken on the old elevated West Side Highway in downtown Manhattan. Cars were no longer allowed on this part, as the highway was falling down, but it was easy to walk up an exit ramp and take in the sights. Alas, it was torn down a year or two later.

This photo was taken exactly 10 years before I was born. Jamie Livingston has been such an inpiration for me. I found his works 6 years ago, and went to university to become a professional photographer. I can’t imagine what path I would have taken had polaroid photography not captured my heart. Even now as I’m finishing my final year at university, I’m listing him as one of my main sources of inspiration.
Thank you for sharing the story he created with friends.

How naive I was 4 years ago thinking the boy was celebrating for my birth. Hahaha. The boy probably was learning how to play… for life is a continuous learning process after all. I’m just thankful for another opportunity to live despite the pandemic. With the uncertainty of the future, the more I get to cherish each day and identify the things that really matter.
