Stories about those days.

The stories that people have about Jamie’s photos are a source of amazement. Β Some are of the “that’s me and we were doing this” type of stories from Jamie’s friends. Some are the “I never met Jamie but this was taken on my birthday and it means a lot to me. And some are just stunningly moving one of a kind stories.

This was the day I was born. My father was working for Sports Illustrated at the time and he was photographing the America’s Cup in Newport, Rhode Island while my mom was 7 months pregnant with me in Connecticut. She went to Newport to visit my dad and they went out to dinner. They had barely been seated when I decided it was time to make my grand debut. My mother was rushed to the little hospital in Newport where they were not prepared for a premie. On the recommendation of a local, my parents requested a particular doctor who happened to be working as a judge for the America’s Cup. As it also happened, he was working for the America’s Cup that night due to a dispute and at first refused my parents’ request when he was contacted by a nurse. However, when he was informed that if he didn’t get to the hospital ASAP he’d read a story in the next Sports Illustrated that placed him in a very poor light, he decided his time was better spent deliverying me. My birth date, weight and length were posted along side the racing results the next day.

In the summer of 1979, when I was a few months short of 10, my parents split up. While it was a shock to me and my sister, and mom was now gloomy, two days a week we spent with dad, receiving probably more attention than we had before. I was very close with him and, though life was now much heavier at home, I enjoyed those days at his place. When I was 12 and a half, he remarried and became father to his wife’s young children. Everything changed.

I don’t think my sister and I would trade in our brother and sister by marriage to get back to our happier days, but I did, in a sense, lose my dad. On paper, he was completely reliable and by the book, but there was some unwritten contract, an unconscious demand from his wife, that, in order to be a super dad to her children, he could not love his blood children more than his adopted ones. I believe the only way for him to do that was to allow himself to see all of the things he didn’t like about his ex, my mom, in me. From then on, he mostly expressed his love for me through worry and pessimism. Nothing was ever the same.

On Sept.4, 1982, 6 months after my dad’s wedding, I turned 13. There is so much mythology to this age, and for a girl and her father, an archetypal split, as girl becomes woman, things naturally change. As I went into puberty, the circumstances in my family made this shift anything but subtle. It was easy for me to feel a veil of despise and mistrust in their home – just like a shadowed woman in the bible.

So, yes, on my 13th birthday, it was so – nothing was ever the same, and so what better symbol for the unknown than a question mark? ?

Its crazy to think that exactly at the moment that this photo was taken I was just newborn and my life would start, I was minutes and hours old, and across the world, this picture was taken somewhere, and I would end up seeing it writing this, only 20 years later. Amazing universe.

This day was my grandfather birthday and the day my mother died. 8 days after I was born. There was no party or fun that day, only sadness, impotence, a little girl.
I learn from him to see the beaty hidden in life, even when everything seems awful, there’s always a little spark of light and something that makes you go on. Just like Jamie did.
He past away a year and a half ago, but I miss him just like the first day.

Crazy. I was born on this day, and I have an crazy love for roses. I even have a shoulder piece tattooed on me. I originally heard about Jamie on a video shared on Facebook and I decided to give it a look. I have a poloroid camera myself and I love to take random everyday pictures as well. It’s amazing what Jamie did, he was way ahead of his time. This is awesome and may his memory be forever shared.

I am overwhelmed. For months I have scrolled through these pictures. I’ve seen from Jamie’s eyes a world that existed before me and I’ve seen a world that exists after him. I’ve seen his friends, family, and life; I feel intimately close to this man I will never meet. I’ve seen buildings that still stand today and some that are gone, just as people are whisked away each moment. I’ve seen the mundane life of his people as clearly as if I had read it from the pages of a book in the largest detail. Being so close to something I will never experience myself feels heart wrenching and bitter yet amazing and gratifying all at the same time. On this, the day I was born, I can see a family I will never meet nor know the names of. This knowledge makes me feel both insignificant and infinite. So many things Jamie experienced somehow feel so significantly entwined with my unrelated life that my mind aches. This amazing man has managed to touch the soul of America. If I’ve seen anything from these photos it’s that he lived the American dream exceptionally well. His free-seeming spirit lives in all of us. There’s no doubt in my mind, Jamie lived a life he was proud of. He lived a life we should all be proud of, because he was authentically himself. Thank you for allowing me to view the world through his eyes.

This day was my 6th birthday. My big brother had just died 3 months prior in a car accident. I remember that day because my parents gave me my first two-wheeler. How they managed to even go out and buy me a present, never mind plan a party — to this day confounds me. My father took me to the church parking lot across the street from our house to teach me to ride it. When I finally managed to pedal away without his hand holding onto the seat, Dad started to cry and said, “Richard would be so proud of you.” This photo reminds me of the brief flash of joy I had amid many months of darkness.
