Stories about those days.

The stories that people have about Jamie’s photos are a source of amazement.  Some are of the “that’s me and we were doing this” type of stories from Jamie’s friends. Some are the “I never met Jamie but this was taken on my birthday and it means a lot to me. And some are just stunningly moving one of a kind stories.

Well, I didn’t know Jamie that well at Bard. We more began to hang out a lot after we had both graduated. He lived in a loft down on Fulton Street with Chris Wangro, Whenever I decided to not go to my job, often, which was a bicycle messenger. I would hang out with them. At that time I had my first apartment on Ludlow street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, one room, with walled off bathroom with a huge bath tub, mice and roaches, two windows at $250 a month. This picture looks to have been taken outside that apartment on the side wall of Katz’s Delicatessen. That was my TV at the time. I might be throwing it out. I chose to live with one for, I remember a year or so, probably was shorter period of time. I remember it feeling so liberating. Hard to imagine with how damn plugged in I am now. I played lots of music around that time meeting lots of people and discovered a lot about NYC through my messengering and other activities, maybe to unseemly to mention here. Then there are all the other pictures of me and Zeena Parkins that I love that Jamie took. I had never seen this one before.

The day I was born. My doctor had a date february 14th, the night I was supposed to be delivered so I was born on the 15th instead.

My mom had planned to name me Valentino if the doctor delivered me in the 14th. Thank god

I was born this day too, 2 weeks early, in the D/FW area. I’ve led a pretty eclectic life and have had a lifelong love of the circus, so I also find this circus-related photo quite fitting. <3

I was born on this day to two terrified kids; my mother was 18 and my father was 17.

I first heard about Jamie and his work from a friend who is now a photographer professionally due to the influence these photos had on him. When he told me about it I waited until I was alone and looked at every single picture on this site in order. It took me a second to realize when I clicked on this one that this was taken on the day I was born.

Jamie’s work is powerful, I believe, because it shows the entirety of the human spectrum; it shows all of the lights and darks, warm yellows and drained grays that make up what it means to be a human. The fight that my parents had to win in order for me to be the person that I am now is reflected in this picture for me, in the coldness of the surroundings and the double image of his face, in the hollowed holes where his eyes should be and the barely perceptible tension of his body. To me, this photo seems to show a sense of the struggle that we as humans face, willingly or unwillingly, and shows it not as some dramatic, demon slaying image, but as an everyday, quiet occurrence.

I love this picture because it, like life, is unfocused and tense, but not sad, not gloomy. Just factual, honest.

I wish I could have known Jaime so I could ask him if he meant to make it that way, or if he just felt it without words as so many artists do.

This is also the day I was born. The man in the center’s pose is interesting to me. I like how he hides behind a chair he pulled up himself, while slyly giving the middle finger. But even though you can’t see his mouth, he is clearly smiling broadly behind that chair.

I was born on this day in Lake Jackson, Tx.
I just watched a video about this site and decided to see what the picture was for this day.
To see such a simple yet powerful photo is inspiring.
It seems they’re on a production set, which is crazy because all throughout high school that’s all I did, I was into production videos and theatre.
To some the picture may not directly speak to them, but these two were photographed doing what they saw as a dream to them.
Although dreams may change, as mine typically do, its always fun to look back on old photos that you’re in just to remember what it was that you were doing at the time.
I do this every year, it helps with facebook releasing “memories from this day” just to see, what was I doing today a year ago, 2 years ago, 3?
That’s why I’m going to ask whoever may be reading this, grab one thing in your life, something you have had for a while, keep it, especially if its something that makes you smile but can also make you frown, or cry, or laugh. Keep something that makes you feel a whole range of emotions, so that when you look at it you can remember the day that thing made you happy, or you can remember when it made you mad so that you may learn from that and know what to do to not be mad at it again.
For me, its a truck, a truck I bought when my old car no longer could get from point a to b. Its the first vehicle I bought with money I earned. Its a small thing in my life, but its also the biggest thing in my life. That truck is much older than me, and has seen much more of the world than I have. But I often look at it and wonder, how many cars have you pulled? How many times have you broke down on the side of a highway? How many times has a mechanic scratched his head wondering how to fix you? But more importantly, how many good memories have been remembered on your tailgate, under the hood, in the cab, parked by a lake, or on a beach, or by a river? What was your first owner’s reaction when they bought you from a dealership?
These are questions I have, but you see with this man, Jaime. You have those answers, you have the answers for what he did every day for 18 years. What he has done is such a beautiful thing, and I wish I could thank him for giving all of us a huge glimpse into his life.
