Stories about those days.

The stories that people have about Jamie’s photos are a source of amazement. Β Some are of the “that’s me and we were doing this” type of stories from Jamie’s friends. Some are the “I never met Jamie but this was taken on my birthday and it means a lot to me. And some are just stunningly moving one of a kind stories.

This was the last day of my first visit proper visit to NYC. I was 22 and studying Fine Art at a University in England, I had managed to scrape enough together for a two week stay in the city, crashing at a friend’s apartment in Battery Park City, right next to the WTC. Coming from rural England, NYC was an astonishing, luminous city of vertiginous architecture in a constant kinetic frenzy of activity. I spent the days visitng art galleries and the nights clubbing at MK, the Tunnel, the World and other places. A formative experience. So wonderful to see these beautiful images capturing hidden moments in that extraordinary place.

This picture was taken on the World Trade Center south tower. The spot Jamie’s pointing to is where aerialist Philippe Petit strung a tightrope and walked across the gap to the north tower in the early 70s. It’s blurry in the photo, but to the left of Jamie’s fingertip is where Petit later painted a picture of a stick figure walking a tightrope and signed his name on the beam where he anchored the wire. The picture & signature were still visible when I went there in the late 90s.

This is my birthday. I fell in love with a girl once, and we used to sit by a creek and talk for hours. We’d write and read short stories to each other, while we sat. We’d dream of a life together. That seems like ages ago. Almost as old as this picture feels. She’s gone now, but this made me think of her. Sweet memories.

I was born on this day. And as a tribute to this photo, my favorite singer, and to Jaime. I will quote one of my favorite songs of all time. About leaving a terrible situation.

    “Saw things… Saw things… Saw things… Saw things…
    Clearer… Clearer… Once you, we’re in my…
    REARVIEWMIRRORRRRRRRRR
I gather speed… from you fucking with me.
Once and for all, I’m far away. Hard to believe, finally the shades, are raised…… “

On this day in Rockford, Illinois, there were record temperatures so cold (-21 degrees F), everyone who had to leave home left their cars running in parking lots, just so they could be sure of getting back home again.

My 21st birthday. This is an apt metaphorical depiction of the debauchery of that night.

We all look to art to find some representation of our own minds, to identify with an expression that perhaps we aren’t capable of articulating ourselves; and in this case, it worked.
