I’m not sure if they are smoking or not, it might be a pen? Difficult to make out. 1997 is not so long ago that there weren’t already tons of common sense smoking regulations. Certainly everywhere that I live (South Africa) already had a lot of non-smoking areas at least a few years before that, early 1990 etc. And definitely in hospitals, airplanes etc..
There also comes a point when it doesn’t matter anymore, so there’s that.

The day before my baby girl was born, April 15th 1983, I was walking around the grocery store admiring all the women with children. So scared about labor and how all these women looked like Super Hero’s to me. I remember thinking, “If they can do it then maybe I can too.” That afternoon my labor started and the Doctor said to go walk. So I called my husband and went for a walk. He found me on the street walking around our block. We enjoyed our last few hours as a couple and welcomed our change to a family. She was born on April 16th at 7:10 am !
