My 18th birthday. Went out to dinner for salad with my boyfriend as he was Catholic and I was going to enter the Catholic church the following year. Silly me! I forgot and put bacon bits on my salad. Two days later his German-born mother gleefully ruined the weekend by telling my I shared a birthday with Hitler. Ha! I also share a birthday with Mother Angelica.

23 May, 1989, I was dropped off by my parents at the Omaha MEPS after what was one of the most uncomfortable dinners ever. On the other hand, it was one of the most liberating days of my life. It was the first decision I’d really made for myself about the direction I wanted to take in life.

That’s the Cliff Notes version anyway. 30+ years later it’s still one of the most vivid in my memory.

I love this project and the care taken to digitize it for everyone to enjoy. I know so little about Mr. Livingston or his circle of friends. Seeing how mundane this day appears to be for others is, well, an enjoyable, mind-tickling bit of juxtaposition.
