My best friend, first love, first kiss.

He was the embodiment of my my 17 year old self, my aspirations, my hopes, my motivation, my changes, my tears, my lack of maturity, my faults, my best memories, my dreams, and my perfect friend.

Time. Time wasn’t even borrowed. Nor truly shared. Time was stolen. I stole his time. Much more time than I needed. Greed. Losing vision of the big picture. That he stayed my friend even when I rejected his admiration and genuine like. Why can’t I engrave that on every visible part of my body so that I can remember how he treated me. He liked me for myself. When will I ever do the same? He has my aspirations.
But he changed. He felt different. I could never imagine how the word “different” terrified me. The thought of me asking “Do you still like me for who I am?” just scare the tears from their dark caves of emotion. To run anywhere and everywhere. After all, my wish to that question was the reason I liked him.

Maybe even loved him.

I turned 20 on the 28th of february 1986. My mother and I went out to a really fancy restaurant in Stockholm, Sweden, to celebrate my birthday but hers as well since she turned 60 just a few days later. We had planned to catch a movie, a new swedish film called “the Mozart Brothers”, before dinner but decided not to go. We had a great time and went home a few hours before midnight. Just an hour later the phone rang and one of my mothers friends called. He was very upset and shouted, almost cried “Palme is dead, Olof Palme has been shot!” Swedish Prime Minster Olof Palme had been assassinated just before midnight after a visit to a cinema with his wife. They had watched “the Mozart Brothers”.

The murder was never solved and the name of the murderer, the motif or anything else around this case is still a mystery. Swedes can often tell what they were doing at this specific time and I guess you can say that we as a nation all took a shot that night.

I too was born this exact day, in 1997 over in Guadalajara. To think 20+ years later I would be looking at this day through another picture, it really puts the size of ourselves into perspective. It’s a constant exercise to remember that others are experiencing their own reality at the same time I am, and everyone else is living their own life doing their own things without ever knowing what a complete stranger is doing thousands of miles away. Of course, who would think this, if not only a second before going back to our own lives? I am grateful for this photo collection in it’s entirety, because even though I never knew Jamie Livingston, I am allowed to look into the life of a complete stranger and see that they too were living that day, they too were busy breathing and thinking and loving life. This is just my opinion, of course, but it really brings about the sense of humanity into a tangible perspective. And I absolutely love it.
