Stories about those days.

The stories that people have about Jamie’s photos are a source of amazement.  Some are of the “that’s me and we were doing this” type of stories from Jamie’s friends. Some are the “I never met Jamie but this was taken on my birthday and it means a lot to me. And some are just stunningly moving one of a kind stories.

I’ve also turned 27 now. It’s pretty amazing to see how the world looked this perticular day!
I believe that my father drove over the speedlimit to get to the hospital in time with my mum this day. The police stopped the car and when they found out there was a baby on the way they escorted us the rest of the way.
And now here I am, 27 years later!

This is the day I was born and funny enough I am a musician and photographer. I saw the story on FB and was moved by it like so many others in sure. The history of us as a species is best told thru pictures and has been since the beginning of our existence. I feel this is that form at it’s truest and most impacting. I wish Jaime could have continued but I am elated to see he was able to get so much before he became one with Mother Earth again.

This is the day I left for the army. I was 18, eager, terrified and unbelievably proud. My dad watched me swear in, then drove me to the San Fransisco airport. I’d never been on a plane longer than an hour before. I left with 3 boys I never met before that day. A whole other part of my life began that day. I was in the army for only 4 years but it forever shaped who I am.

4:30 a.m., I was 9 years old and I decided to sleep on the couch that night. My sister was having a sleepover with her friends as a late birthday celebration. I hadn’t told anyone that I wasn’t in my room so when the walls started shaking and my dresser fell over and blocked the door to my bedroom, my mother freaked out and almsot ripped the door from its hinges. I calmy told her I was on the couch as soon as I realized that she was looking for me. All the dishes had shaken out of the cabinets, our entertainment center was face down in the living room, my brother, not even a year old at the time, had no idea what happened. We tried to hurry and get our shoes on in the dark, my mom was telling us we had to get out of our second floor apartment before there was another aftershock. One of my sisters friends asked what an aftershock was, and she didn’t have to wait long to find out.

We camped out on the lawn for the rest of the morning and the next night. The sewers still on fire, the sirens coming from all directions, and little old me, sitting there wondering why we decided to live on the San Andreas fault. It was one of those things that adults remember as a tragedy but us kids remember as ‘the good ol’ days’.

My birthday. Seeing this, a small piano in a box. Nothing else. There doesn’t need to be anything else. I carry my music with me wherever I go. I’ve been carrying a piano in a trunk my entire life, and a single polaroid captures it in such a simplistic way, but it’s perfect.

I turned 19. I was trying to decide what to do with my life. I wanted to be an artist. My mother wanted me to be a nurse because I couldn’t support myself as an artist, I wasn’t good enough according to her. I became a nurse and worked as a nurse until 2006, I took care of with people affected by HIV/AIDS although early on we knew it as GRID. I spent time in ICUs and ERs, on geriatric wards, in orthopedics and rehab, and in oncology. I helped people live and sometimes I helped them when they were dying. I married, I had two lovely children. My husband and I will be married 30 years on this Valentine’s Day (2017). In 2007 I lit a torch for the first time and fell love with melting glass. My husband encouraged me to follow my dreams. Today, Feb 2, 2017, I make my living as a glass artist. My mother was wrong about me but I don’t regret my time as a nurse. I learned so much about people and about life. I learned about determination from a man who climbed through a ground floor window at a hospital were I worked that I had unlocked so that he could say good-bye to his lover because that man’s family had barred him from the room. I saw the love in the eyes of a child dying with a stomach tumor in ICU at the age of 7 and telling her mother, “It’s alright mama, I can see gramma again.” I saw love and hate, good and evil, pain and recovery, and the remarkable abilities of the human spirit. Those years were a gift few get to experience. If I could go back to that day I’d tell the girl that was me that it’s OK, she will get to be an artist – she just needs to do a few things first.
