Stories about those days.

The stories that people have about Jamie’s photos are a source of amazement. Β Some are of the “that’s me and we were doing this” type of stories from Jamie’s friends. Some are the “I never met Jamie but this was taken on my birthday and it means a lot to me. And some are just stunningly moving one of a kind stories.

Thank you, Jamie for your amazing legacy. All of your Polaroids evoke feelings, some joy, some sorrow, some adventure, others a journey never wished for. This was taken on my birthday. What a gift.

I was born on this day. I’m now living in Paris by way of Los Angeles. I’m a career woman but now only able to find work as a nanny-most of my days are spent like this, at a playground! Life is mysterious and I am happy to see this positive connection. Stay young. -Katie Allen

I was 15. I remember this Christmas because I had snuck a peek at my gifts and I was disappointed that I only got a shirt after my Mom had talked so much about how I was just going to looove my gift. It was silky and had pastel colors in an ombrΓ© pattern and there were white hearts on it. It was meant to look as if hearts had been spray painted or watercolor painted around them. I simultaneously loved and hated that shirt because I did like it but one shirt for Christmas? Blah.

When I first heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana. I loved heavy metal but during this time, a year of the 1990’s under our belts as a whole, especially out here in the west, I can remember change was in the air, the beginning of anything from the 1980’s was rejected, and the later more rebellious Gen Xers were coming of age were angry and well…things got Real. Angry Grunge Rock and Gangster Rap set the mood for the times…maybe that’s why people voted for Clinton against the Pres. Bush, maybe they got tired of crooked cops leading to riots, gangs began to be glorified, Marijuana regained mass interest, and Pandora’s box opened wider, making things easier to define what’s real and what’s in style.

I can remember this time was a special and unprecedented one. President Clinton’s 2nd term was in its beginning, Grunge and Gangster Rap music was on it’s downturn, I just turned 20, a slight renaissance of the late 1960’s enter pop culture, Gen X grew in strength and the strangest but yet amazing event that occurred in the early part of 1997…was the Haley-Bop Comet. It look like a super-sized comet in Earth’s atmosphere with lights of sand dust on it’s tail. What an amazing sight to witness and a foretelling event of the future holds.

I turned 19 and had a few beers with some friends at my dad’s house, and when I was leaving to get ready for a night of debarchary and youthfulness, We hugged and said “I love You” for the first and last time in our lives. He didn’t past away for another 6 years later, but if he wasn’t drunk, he was straight forward and calm, so I guess you take what you can get. This was a day calming and enjoyable because just a few days from now, on the 22nd, a violent drive-by were friends were struck by burning bullets and my mother, who’s house we were gathered at was struck by shot gun pallets, that eventually took a toll on her health and past away 3 years later.
