My dad died this day. I held his hand and kissed him goodbye. Then I cried.

My paternal grandmother died. She was my life. My dad was in a VA hospital, dying of emphysema. I went to visit him, and had to tell him. It was the first time I had ever seen my father cry. Later that year would be my turn to cry. He died just after Xmas.

Anchors aweigh! The day I joined the US Navy My girlfriend (future wife) was ambivalent, as was my mother. My dad…in hearing I was headed for aviation was more than a bit shocked. He was black shoe Navy, and figured if I joined I would go that route. But the first time he saw me in uniform I thought he was going to cry.

My 30th birthday. A wonderfully warm sunny day in Davenport IA. There was a surprise birthday party for me in the backyard. Little did I know that five days later, my paternal grandmother, the woman who meant as much to me as my own mother (more perhaps), would be gone.
