My birthday as well, I turned 4.

My future wife, Irma, came down to my room in Aker’s Hall to check out my roommate’s butt…. He wasn’t there. I was relaxing and reading, which is my favourite pastime, even on most Friday nights… one thing led to another. We were married on April 11th, 1987 and now, in the blink of an eye, we have been married 30 years, have 4 adult children and one precious and very precocious granddaughter…thank you Jamie for these wonderful photos, you are still making an impact, Rick.

This is the day I was born. My mother had spent the last month of her pregnancy in hospital due to potential complications and friends and family had brought her yummy food like lasagna and ice cream. When the doctors thought it was time for me to arrive they gave her something to get contractions started. I completely ignored it. Eventually I was born at 22:40 that day and whenever my mother tells someone that I actually came later than expected I reply that being given yummy food and having a roof over my head anyone would have wanted to stay longer when not knowing what was about to happen. 🙂

The day I was born. 9 am. Don’t know why, but I was never curious what day of the week it was on. Somehow, I was surprised it was a Thursday. Not because I expected a different day, but because I didn’t expect any day. It always seemed like an abstraction, just knowing the date. Knowing it was a Thursday gives it texture that i can grasp.

This is the day that I also got married. It rained so hard in NJ that roads were flooded and the reception hall had no electricity. We had our party, in the dark. The only lights in the room were from candles on the table. My purse was stolen that night, so we couldn’t leave for our honeymoon. Even though I cried at the end of the night…all of our family and friends remember every detail of that night and how much fun they had just sitting and visiting with out of town family. We are still married…so I guess rain on your wedding day is good luck.
